DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS FOR THE SPANISH ELECTRICITY GRID OF 2025

The Project has a budget of 40 million euros and is part-funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, with ERDF co-funding under the Singular and Strategic Projects sub-programme.

This is the first R&D and innovation initiative promoted by the Spanish Technology Platform for electricity grids – FUTURED, and represents a major milestone as a joint initiative uniting the Spanish electricity sector in the area of R&D and innovation.

With a timeframe of four years (2009-2012), the Project is led and driven by Red Eléctrica de España, Endesa, Gas Natural via Unión Fenosa Distribución, HC Energía and Iberdrola, with Tecnalia as overall coordinator.

Also involved in the project are 25 equipment manufacturing and engineering companies, 6 Technology Centres and research institutes, together with 9 Universities and public research bodies, making up a consortium of 45 partners.

The Project is based on the FUTURED Vision and Research Agenda, the overall objectives of which are to design and progressively develop the electricity grid of 2025, making it capable of providing and guaranteeing an electricity supply that meets the new needs of all users in an efficient, reliable and sustainable way.

In this context, the REDES 2025 Singular and Strategic Project has the particular objective of designing, specifying and developing technology solutions that will enable this vision to be achieved, dealing not only with applications based on power electronics, energy storage and superconductivity, but also with tools for integrating distributed energy resources into the grid and for information management in the electricity grid of the future.
